Alpha 2 Macroglobulin (PRP)

Alpha 2 Macroglobulin (A2M version of PRP)

WHY?

A2M is a low risk, high reward option using your body’s own healing properties while avoiding steroids and surgery. It is used for arthritic joints as well as painful tendons, ligaments, or muscle. It promotes healing and expedites recovery. Many athletes and active individuals of a wide range of ages opt for this option. Recovery is faster and easier than surgery. There is extensive data to support this treatment.

There are several keys to getting successful relief from A2M treatment. Patient selectivity and provider experience in addition to the type of A2M procedure kit are vital. Like with so many things in life regarding quality, not all A2M procedures are created equally.

WHAT?

A2M from plasma is a naturally occurring molecule in your body. With our technique, we can concentrate your plasma (PRP and PPP) to A2M up to 6X your normal level. It is just a different version of PRP that targets a different type of joint and tissue issue. It acts as a powerful protector against cartilage breakdown. A2M attaches to and removes destructive enzymes, called proteases, that damage cartilage cells and tissue in the joint.

A2M is like a “natural steroid” moving inflammation out of the joint.

The goal of this treatment option is to:

  • Decrease pain
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Improve function
  • Heal the injury including small or partial tears
  • Prevent further degeneration process and protect cartilage
  • Delay or avoid need for surgery

HOW?

  • Office visit
  • Simple blood draw and then centrifuge and prepare for injection
  • Relax for about 10 more min in office
  • Takes about an hour total
  • Rest at home remainder of the day/evening

EXPECTATIONS?

Mild increased soreness for 2-3 days and rarely up to 7-14 days or more. This is due to the healing process taking place. Take time to rest and “listen to your body” during this time.

Avoid anti-inflammatories topically and orally for 7 days following the treatment. You may use over the counter analgesics (Tylenol, lidocaine) instead. Use of ice is discouraged.

Usually, you are back to PT or light sport by day 10-14 and back to full-fledged exercise or sport in 30 days. You may do other exercise not using the affected limb in the initial phase. This will be discussed more fully on an individual basis.

It takes 6-8 weeks on average for the “full effect” but can take up to 12 weeks.

Data supports that repeating PRP procedure in a series of 2-3 is more effective but we base this on each individual case. Most often, we can reach our goals with 1-2 PRP treatments, 4 weeks apart.

RISKS?

With A2M treatment, risk is very low. Afterall, we are using your own body’s product so there is no risk there. Most people have general fear of needles and blood draw, and this is natural. We use different techniques to help minimize or avoid pain, anxiety, and fear. We don’t want anything to stand in the way of you getting the relief you need.
